First public Montessori in Oklahoma opens
The school will tout a new learning approach for students in a widely under-served community. The first public Montessori School in the state is scheduled to open in Tulsa this fall and teachers say they are getting very excited to start this school year in a brand new building with a new learning approach for students. “It’s going to challenge everything that Tulsa Public Schools has been doing,” said teacher Elizabeth Steinocher. Steinocher previously taught at Skelly Elementary for 10 years before deciding to transfer to the new Montessori School.

Montessori student inspired by biochemist's visit forms mentorship   When Dr. Chris Pierret, biochemist, molecular biologist and coordinator of Integrated Science Education Outreach (InSciEd Out) at Mayo Clinic, visited Jessica Daniels’ fifth-grade classroom at Montessori at Franklin, Minnesota, one student in particular, Austin McCoy, was left with many unanswered questions. Daniels connected Austin with Pierret. “Austin had 300 questions and they were all footnoted,” Pierret said. While the initial encounter provided McCoy with a mentor, these days Pierret says “who is pushing who” can vary on a daily basis.

Superintendent announces retirement, reflects on Montessori program growth
After 16 years of serving the students and citizens of Indianapolis Public Schools (1998-2010, 2015-current), Kelly Bently announced plans of retirement from the IPS Board of School Commissioners at the end of 2018. Bently continues, "while I have enjoyed my time on the board tremendously, I feel strongly that it is time to pass the baton to the next generation of public servants."
