Cosmic Education: An Offering of Windows and Mirrors

July 6, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

ET

Cosmic Education is Dr. Montessori’s holistic and integrative approach to presenting science, geography, cultural studies, history and arts. While this term is generally reserved for children working at the elementary level, the keys Cosmic Education can be found in Early Childhood. Our role as guides, in these early years, is to provide an environment filled with activities that support natural curiosity and feed the child’s sense of wonder about the world. Inspired by Emily Style’s SEED Project, we combine An Offering of Windows and Mirrors, encouraging the child to develop a sense of self and place. With windows, the child is given a view into someone else’s personal experience; while mirrors reflect the child’s personal experience. The question is, how can we impart to the child a sense of responsibility to care for and appreciate all life on earth? Join us to discover mindful and organized practices of Cosmic Education for your Montessori Community.

Shelby Hiken‘s connection to Montessori began when she was just three years old and she’s been dedicated to the Montessori Movement ever since. A BA from the University of Arizona, an M.Ed from Loyola University in Maryland and an AMI Primary Certification from the Washington Montessori Institute, launched her career as a Montessori Guide. Shelby is a founding member of Nurturing Nest Montessori School in Columbia, MD where she held the position of Director of Primary Pedagogy. Currently, she is a Lower Elementary Guide at the Baltimore Montessori Public Charter School. At the Center for Guided Montessori Studies, Shelby shares Dr. Maria Montessori’s Philosophy and Curriculum to guide new teachers on their Montessori journey. As an Instructional Guide, Practicum Advisor and Field Consultant, she encourages these teachers to visualize and contribute to the cosmic task of creating world peace through work with children.
