By successfully completing this 12-week course, you will earn an IMC Elementary Assistant Teacher Credential for supporting teachers and children in both Lower (6-9) and Upper (9-12) Elementary Classrooms

Our Program

The Elementary Assistant Certification will entail approximately 8 hours of coursework each week, including video viewing of Montessori lectures and lessons, online discussion forums, observation and/or other practical assignments to put what you are learning into practice, journaling, and a 1-hour live video class in zoom each week.

Week 1 – Orientation and Montessori History

Participants are introduced to the course structure, online learning tools, and the history of Montessori education. This week lays the foundation by exploring Dr. Maria Montessori’s life, her discoveries, and the development of the Montessori movement.

Week 2: Montessori Philosophy

Learners dive into the core principles of Montessori philosophy, examining the essential qualities of authentic Montessori education and reflecting on how these principles shape the classroom experience.

Week 3: The Absorbent Mind and Sensitive Periods

This week focuses on child development, including the Absorbent Mind and Sensitive Periods. Participants explore guiding principles and consider how developmental stages influence classroom practice.

Week 4: The Prepared Environment and Observation

Students examine the structure and purpose of the prepared environment and learn how observation serves as a key tool in supporting children’s independence and engagement.

Week 5: Elementary Overview and Positive Classroom Culture

An overview of the elementary classroom is presented, along with strategies for building community, fostering collaboration, and creating a positive classroom culture.

Week 6: The Role of the Assistant

This week clarifies the essential responsibilities of the Montessori assistant, emphasizing collaboration with the lead teacher, classroom alignment, and the practice of grace and courtesy.

Week 7: Peace Education and Redirecting Behavior

Participants explore peace education, healthy school practices, and constructive strategies for observing and redirecting behavior in ways that align with Montessori principles.

Week 8: The Great Lessons

Learners are introduced to the Great Lessons and their role in inspiring curiosity and interconnected learning within the elementary classroom.

Week 9: Cosmic Curriculum

This week examines the Cosmic Curriculum and its emphasis on interconnected knowledge, helping children understand their place within the larger universe.

Week 10: Mathematics

Participants explore Montessori math materials and lessons, gaining hands-on understanding of how concrete materials support abstract mathematical thinking.

Week 11: Language Arts

This week focuses on Montessori language materials, including grammar and sentence analysis, highlighting how structured materials build strong literacy foundations.

Week 12: Bias in the Classroom and Reflection

The course concludes with reflection, self-awareness, and discussion of bias in the classroom. Participants evaluate their growth and articulate how they are prepared to serve effectively as Montessori assistants.
